Meredith opens up about her fear of Alzheimer’s

Meredith has a family history of Alzheimer’s disease. Her dad, aunt, and brother all had it, and it was devastating for the veteran journalist to watch her closest family lose their selves to the condition that still has no cure.

Genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s has long been known, and Meredith is afraid the disease may eventually affect her.

In an interview with Good Housekeeping, she was asked if she thinks about such a possibility, and she said:

I do, because if I forget something, instead of just thinking, ‘Well, you're overworked, you're exhausted’, I can't help but think, ‘Gee, is this the first sign?’

She then went on to recall how it started in her brother Stephen: he would repeat himself and forget things he had just done. It took a lot of time to get the right diagnosis, despite his family history. Shortly after Stephen was diagnosed, he couldn’t recognize anyone.

Fighting the good fight

Stephen Vieira passed away aged 65 in 2014, as a result of Alzheimer’s complications. Now, his sister made it her goal to do her part in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

Meredith is involved with the Alzheimer’s Association and has helped raise money for Alzheimer’s research. She hopes she will still be alive to see a cure or at least an effective preventive treatment for the disease, and she will continue to do what’s in her power to see it happen.
