Even though they knew each other since childhood, the two ladies became close only later in life when Diana was 19 and Sarah was 21. They had a lot in common and shared the same circle of friends, so it's no surprise they were soon having lunch together every week.

It was Diana, who introduced Fergie to her future husband, Prince Andrew. But little did she know that her friend will win the hearts of the royal family, which is something she so desperately tried to do but failed.

"Why can’t you be like her?"

According to the words, written by royal author Andrew Morton in his biography, Diana: In Her Own Words, Sarah was ‘immediate hit’ in the royal family. She was very different from the Princess of Wales, which prompted many people to compare the two, including Diana’s own husband, Prince Charles.

Slightly older than Diana but infinitely more experienced in the ways of the world, the Duchess displayed enthusiasm where Diana showed dismay, hearty jollity compared with Diana’s droopy silences, and boundless energy against the Princess’s constant illness.

Fergie was like 'a breath of fresh air' and Charles wanted his wife to be liked her. He even asked Diana once:

Why can’t you be more like Fergie?

That made Lady Di very confused. She felt like whatever she was doing was never enough which might have created a little rivalry between the two women.

But despite many ups and downs in their relationship, Fergie still calls Diana her 'best friend'.

Diana was my best friend and the funniest person I knew. She had such timing and wit. It was a total joy to be with her because we just laughed and enjoyed life so much.

The Duchess missed her friend the most when her daughter, Princess Eugenie, was getting married in October. She believes that her former sister-in-law would love the wedding and says that Diana is still with her all the time.
