Closed For Business! Ivanka Trump Shuts Down Fashion Empire To Focus On White House Role

July 25, 2018

About two months ago, Ivanka Trump and her business empire came under scrutiny again after she censured several new Chinese trademarks. Several news outlets reported that the trademarks were approved just days after President Trump announced plans to help Chinese tech giant ZTE accelerate job growth in America.

Before now, critics of the Trump administration have cited conflict of interest as a major issue with the President engaging members of his immediate family as top advisers while still maintaining control of family business interests.

In a surprising move, Ivanka Trump announced on Tuesday that she is shutting down her fashion business to focus on her work as an adviser to President Trump. She shared the news with The Wall Street Journal before other news outlets picked it up.

This excerpt from her statement to NBC News summarizes Ivanka's decision and her plans for the future.

After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business, but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington, so making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners.

Ivanka came under fire after reports revealed that she was paying workers at her factory in China $62/week. Already some retail store carrying Ivanka Trump goods are already taking them off shelves citing weak sales.

Critics have called her out for wearing pieces from her brand to public functions, as it were, using her position in the government to give her brand more publicity, raising even more concerns about abuse of privilege and unfair business practices.

The brand experienced huge sales during the 2016 campaign but took a major dive after the President’s inauguration, largely due to boycotts powered by anti-Trump protesters. #GrabYourWallet, in particular, was responsible for a massive migration away from Ivanka goods.

A source familiar with the matter says that staff of the company will receive severance pay in line with industry standards. President Donald Trump is yet to comment on the matter but there are chances he might, seeing as the closure is somewhat related to his actions as President.
