While everyone was enjoying a delicious meal and meeting up with relatives and friends, Winfrey was mourning her mom.

The American talk show host expressed her gratitude to everybody who shared their sorrow, emotions, and support.

Gruesome past

In 2010, the whole family faced a shattering secret: Oprah had a half-sister, Patricia, who was put up for adoption by her own mother. Lee was keeping her away from the family, but later realized that it was "a terrible thing to be done."

In adulthood, Patricia tried to find and contact her mother, but Lee refused to meet her daughter. Patricia met Vernita in October 2010 and met Winfrey on Thanksgiving of the same year. Oprah commented:

It was one of the greatest surprises of my life. It left me speechless. I think she’s been just a remarkable human being. That was a new experience for me to be in a relationship with somebody who actually didn’t want anything, but was just there to be supportive of me. So it’s been really great.

Patricia was in the foster care system until age 7, when she was adopted. Patricia, a single mother, had her daughter, Aquarius, at age 17 and son, Andre, six years later.

Patricia was a long-lost sister for her, but they both became close and supportive for each other. Now they are reliving their relationship every way possible.

Kindness is on top

Oprah Winfrey had a horrible childhood, but it made her stronger, more confident, and honest. After finding out about her half-sister, in 2014, the TV host bought her sister a $500,000 home and provided a monthly allowance.

Patricia had a dream of quitting her job and going back to college to become a social worker, and with Oprah's help, she's been doing great so far.

Now Patricia is fulfilling her dreams and pursuing her interests. Although adoption impacted her life, she is still thankful for everything.
