What's It Like Going To Prom As The President's Kid? Michelle Obama Recalls Malia's Prom Without The Secret Service

November 13, 2018

Being the U.S. President's kid isn't easy. No matter how much you try to be 'plain and simple', your private life will always be in the spotlight.

Prom problems

In 2016, the former POTUS shared that his older daughter, Malia, then 16, attended her school prom for the first time. In the same breath, Obama conceded that dating issues would be a huge problem for her due to the Secret Service being around 24/7.

Although prom traditions comprise going to the party with the opposite sex, the Obamas weren't sure it would be a brilliant idea for Malia.

Dating, I think, will be an issue because I have men with guns surrounding them at all times, which I’m perfectly happy with, but they may feel differently about it.

Notwithstanding, the parents were delighted to see their daughter happy and bright since they allowed her to go with her date to the prom night without security.

Personal story

In her new memoir, Becoming (2018), Michelle Obama reflected on her past struggles, marriage with her sweetheart, Barack Obama, and her family life in general.

The former First Lady got candid about Malia's prom. The elder Obama daughter begged her parents to 'be cool'. Malia said that she had been invited by the guy she liked and wanted to go with him.

According to White House security protocol, no family member shall be in a vehicle that isn't under Secret Service protection. However, Barack and Michelle Obama made an exception for one night.

Barack and I shook the young man’s hand, snapped a few pictures, and gave our daughter a hug before sending them on their way. We took what was perhaps unfair comfort in the knowledge that Malia’s security detail would basically ride the boy’s bumper all the way to the restaurant where they were going for dinner before the dance and would remain on quiet duty throughout the night.

Moreover, the former president was relieved about the choice because of Michelle. She's always provided a great example of how a woman should behave. So, the prom date took place, and the Obamas were on cloud nine.

What about the second daughter?

Sasha Obama, 17, attended her school prom with a guy earlier this year. Undoubtedly, organizing the prom date and celebration was much more relaxed and less stressful for the second daughter than it was for Malia, since Barack and Michelle Obama stepped down from the White House by that time.

The former First Lady recalled the core value of parenting: If parents show an excellent example of how to be and behave, everything will be all right.

I tried to tell Sasha and Malia, 'Do not go to other 14-year-olds for information, 'cause all you all are dumb. Talk to me.' It's like, 'All of you are dumb. You know nothing. Love you!'

Both Malia, 20, and Sasha, 17, are adolescents and currently dating guys. Thankfully, the tension, spotlight, and focus have decreased, and they can have a normal life like any other teen.
