Why Paul Newman Could Never Deal With His Only Son’s Passing: “It Was The Saddest Day Of My Life”

Paul Newman was one of the most eminent actors of the so-called Golden Era of Hollywood. But few people know that behind his charming smile, the actor had been hiding deep grief that influenced his entire life. It came with a loss of his only son, Scott.


Paul Newman: A loving father and husband

It’s hard to find a person who didn’t hear about the award-winning actor and Hollywood heartthrob, Paul Newman. The actor stole fans’ hearts around the world due to his iconic roles in The Long, Hot Summer, The Hustler, The Verdict and a number of other great films.

Newman had six children: one son and five daughters. In a statement dedicated to the anniversary of the actor’s demise, his daughters recalled what a great dad he was.

Devoted husband. Loving father. Adoring grandfather... always and to the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune.


Paul and his second wife, actress Joanne Woodward, kept their marriage strong for long 50 years. They were considered one of the most successful Hollywood married couples.


Tense relationships with the son

However, there was one thing in Paul’s life that made him feel hurt – his tense relationship with the son. The matter is that, after Paul divorced his first wife, their son Scott remained living with his mother. The boy blamed Woodward for his parents’ failed marriage. In some extent, it had an impact on his relationship with Newman too.


Young Scott spent most of his time in private schools. As a kid, he didn’t see his father most of the time. The young man had troubles with the law and even was arrested for assaulting a police officer. Thanks to his father, Scott was put on probation.

Scott made several attempts to follow in Paul Newman’s footsteps as an actor. Due to his father’s assistance, the young man got several roles in the movies, but none of them was successful.

Scott had troubles with alcohol. At the age of 28, Newman Junior passed away from the reported drug overdose.

The Scott Newman Foundation

For Paul Newman, his son’s passing appeared to be the biggest life loss which he couldn’t deal with. In one of his interviews, the actor said:

It was the saddest day of my life. The memory of it can never be erased.

Newman could never cope with Scott’s demise. After the tragedy, that turned his entire life upside down, the actor launched the Scott Newman Foundation aimed to help people who suffer from drug abuse. Paul established the Foundation in memory of his beloved son.


Every parent would understand Paul Newman’s feelings as a lost father. Nevertheless, the actor turned that emotion into great works. Only a person of strong will is capable of doing that.
