Meghan Markle is now an official member of the royal family. She probably has some ideas of what is expected of her in line with her new status. But are there some royal protocol that her friends should know about?

The Duchess of Sussex

Former American actress Meghan Markle married her (literal) prince on Saturday, May 19th. In addition to that, she also received the title of Duchess of Sussex from the Queen herself.

This makes her an official member of the royal family, and according to traditions, there are a few royal rules she should be aware of. However, one has to wonder if her close friends have to take a course in British royal protocol to know how to address her.

'Do I Bow To You Now?'

An old friend of Meghan's who said he felt "weird" about her new royal status wanted to be sure how to correctly address her to show respect.

Daniel Martin, who is also her makeup artist, had asked the duchess on her wedding day if he had to start bowing when addressing her. He told UK Express:

I asked her ‘do I bow to you? I don’t want to disrespect you, but I’ve known you for almost ten years. What’s up?’

Meghan's reply was the sweetest. She told Daniel:

I’m always going to be Meg.

Despite her response, Daniel insisted that he would make sure to be extra respectful the next time they meet. But he was relieved to know that "Meg is always going to be Meg."

He also shared more details about what went on behind the scenes at the royal wedding. According to him, the bride was not the least bit nervous. She was calm and cool-headed despite all her friends being very nervous.

What exactly is the bowing protocol in the royal family?

Meghan is expected to curtsy to the Queen as well as Prince Philip, Prince Charles, and Camilla. The list also includes her brother and sister-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge due to William's position as a future king.

Kate Middleton is also expected to do the same to other high-ranking members of the family, including 'blood princesses,' which includes Princess Anne, Beatrice, Eugenie, and Alexandra. However, there's an exception. If Prince William is present, Kate's status is elevated, and the 'blood princesses' will have to curtsy to her.

This will likely be the case for Meghan as well.
