You’d think that it’s not good for marriage when two spouses work together. Who would want to be with their partner all day, every day? Even if you’re madly in love, it can be tiring!
However, there’s one prominent couple whose strong union disproves all stereotypes about working together while married.
Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker’s extraordinary love story
Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, stars of the long-running legal drama L.A. Law, have been married for more than 40 years.
Some fans of L.A. Law thought Michael and Jill, who were a couple on the screen as well, met on the set, but they actually met a decade before the show first aired! In fact, the show’s creator, Steven Bochco, wrote the roles of Ann Kelsey and Stuart Markowitz specifically for them.
In an interview with Parade, the two actors recalled what it was like to play a married couple and how it affected their marriage.
At first, they had doubts if it would work. Jill said:
We didn’t know if we would like it. A lot of people don’t like working with their spouses because they can’t get enough perspective, but Bochco asked us to do this Hill Street Blues two-part episode as a couple. We think that he was really testing that to see how we were on screen as a couple. Turned out that we loved it.
L.A. Law ran for eight seasons, and it wasn’t always good for the marriage. Jill admitted that when their characters fought, that energy sometimes translated into her real-life relationship with Michael, but they always managed to iron it out.
On the whole, there was more good than bad in playing a couple on the screen. Certain moments on the show even felt like they were real and were a source of genuine excitement. Michael recalled:
It was great to be able to court my wife again, fall in love with her again, and marry her again. I think it was an amazing opportunity for us.
Together in sickness and in health
While filming L.A. Law, Jill had a major health crisis. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, a diagnosis that put her career and even her life on the line.
Fortunately, she was successfully treated over the next two years after being diagnosed, and Michael was by her side the whole time. Since then, Jill is a vocal advocate for breast cancer research and early detection, and Michael supports her initiatives every step of the way.
