The tradition, called the King's Christmas Message, has started back in 1932. It was a chance for the British sovereign to speak to his or her people and revisit the major events that happened during the passing year, as well as to reflect on the personal milestones of the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth’s first message was broadcasted on December 25 in 1957. It was the first time the British people joined their Queen in her home.

The age-long tradition continued till this day and yesterday Her Majesty wished Merry Christmas to the whole country once again.

The Queen’s joke

The monarch spoke about many important things, mentioning those who helped her to go through the changes throughout the years. She said:

Through the many changes I have seen over the years, faith, family and friendship have been not only a constant for me but a source of personal comfort and reassurance.

She also touched upon the controversial topic of religion saying that although it does good in the service of others, some people can "fall victim to tribalism."

But as well as offering words of comfort and reassurance, the Queen added a touch of humor in her speech. She joked about how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, as well as Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s nuptials, and the birth of her great-grandchildren, kept her busy, saying:

Closer to home, it's been a busy year for my family, with two weddings and two babies and another child expected soon. It helps to keep a grandmother well-occupied.

This was not the first time the Queen lightens up her speech with a joke. After Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ wedding ceremony, she went to watch horse races.

And when she returned to give her speech, she didn’t mention the newlyweds and talked about the winner of the Grand National instead. Her Majesty is a very inspiring woman and we love that she can joke, despite her position.
