"Nasty And Unhygienic": Model Emily Ratajkowski Celebrates Her Armpit Hair And Ignites Fierce Online Debate

August 12, 2019

More and more celebrities are using their platform to support and empower others. But not every action will be well-received by the public.

A successful model

Emily Ratajkowski is a model and actress who has been steadily making her way to the top for years now. One of the actions that shot her to the limelight was her appearance on Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines', a song that became a hit in many countries.

Emily has walked runways, graced magazine covers and modeled for the biggest brands. So it's safe to say that if she has something to say, people will listen.

Wrong message?

The model did have something to say recently when she shared a black-and-white shot of herself on Instagram.

In the photo, Emily can be seen in her underwear, posing with her arms raised to reveal her armpit hair. In the caption, she explained that in an essay for Harpers Bazaar, she wrote that women should always have the opportunity to be whatever they want to be.

She went on to say that every woman has a right to choose how she dresses and whether or not to shave.

Do your thing ladies, whatever it might be.

Not everyone is a fan

The message seems impressive enough, however, many of her fans posted comments claiming that Emily has it all wrong.

For one thing, some felt like while her stand was laudable, there was something fishy going on with the timing. @lindseywixson said;

I think they have been editing this photo to make it look like you have more hair. 🙄 anyway keep shining gorgeous. They can say what they want...

And @bryn.brakely posted;

good message but august 1st she posts a completely bald armpit?? they really photoshopped hair on her armpits.

@aemith believes that armpit hair or not, the world is focusing on all the wrong things.

Imagine a world where slavery, human trafficking, child exploitation, resource and habitat loss are constant but we care more about women with arm pit hair. Is this social justice?

A few more Instagram users pointed out that showing off armpit hair isn't empowering but rather, it's unhygienic and not aesthetically pleasing.

@slaide__ said;

I don't understand how letting your armpit hair grow out is Empowering? Why does it make you feel good? We ain't oppressing you we're just saying it doesn't look that great.. but do you.

Another user @alevtishkas agreed, saying;

It’s more about hygiene exactly because of that it’s not so nice. I think we can express women’s freedom or whatever another way, more pretty way.

And @charming__bee said Emily's stance has nothing to do with feminism;

This has nothing to do with feminism. But this nasty, unhygienic and let the armpit hair grow out of laziness.

Love it or hate it, you have to admit it was pretty brave of Emily to put it all out there this way.
