January 14, 2020 10:11

It's a time of grieving for country singer Martina McBride who's coming to terms with the loss of her mother.

Martina's achievements

All any parent wants is for their child to be happy, kind, successful and be celebrated for their special skills. By this definition, Martina must have made her mother really proud indeed. With a successful singing career and a celebrity lifestyle without scandal or distasteful drama, Martina really has made big strides.

According to her bio, this 53-year-old woman has made a major impact in the world of country music. Her musical journey began in 1987 when she was only 21 years and since then, her career has blossomed. She has earned recognition for her work in terms of awards and she earned herself 14 Grammy nominations.

Martina loses her mom

Losing a parent has got to be one of the most difficult things to go through. And the country singer is currently dealing with such a loss.

On Friday, January 10, Martina took to social media to reveal that she had spent the past week surrounding her mother, Jeanne Schiff, with love.

Martina revealed that Jeanne had to undergo emergency heart surgery and at the time, the singer believed all would be well while appealing to her fans to send positive thoughts and prayers.

Sadly, it wasn't exactly a happy ending as, a couple of days later, Martina announced that her mother had passed away. Jeanne was described by her daughter as a "complex and amazing woman."

In a beautiful tribute which she posted via Instagram, Martina reflected on what her childhood was like and what a great mom Jeanne was.

She made her 4 kids self sufficient, told us to go outside and play, gave us chores to do and taught us how to work. She wasn’t one to smother you with affection, do your homework for you, or attend every ballgame, but we always knew she was there for us.

In addition, she described her final moments with her late mom.

I spent the last week with her in ICU, with my dad, my brothers, and my sister, and a fantastic and caring team of doctors who went above and beyond to try and get her to a place where her heart would sustain her. During that week I held her hand, rubbed her shoulders, stroked her face, told her I loved her and she told me she loved me.

She went on to add that she loved having that special time with Jeanne and she hopes her family will move on with strength.

Coping with a parent's death

Saying goodbye to your mom or dad is a really big deal regardless of your age. If you or someone you know is going through this, you may want to keep these in mind.

  • Grieve in a way that works for you: Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for going through the mourning process. Yes, losing a parent is the natural order of things but it doesn't mean it won't hit you hard.
  • Take care of yourself: As you mourn, ensure you practice self-care. Don't be tempted into activities that could do more harm than good. Get some sleep, try to eat, exercise and so on.
  • It comes and goes: Sometimes, you'll feel better and out of nowhere, the pain comes crashing down on you again. This ebb and flow is a normal part of grieving. Acknowledge it when it happens.
  • Support system: Your mother or father may be gone but this doesn't mean you should shut yourself off from the world. Surround yourself with people that love and care for you.
