O’Neal once revealed to PEOPLE that he doesn’t go easy on his five children when it comes to their education.

I expect them to do their best ... You can have all the money in the world, but if you don’t have education, you can’t make it grow. I didn’t want to be like 80% of the athletes who stop playing and have nothing. I don’t want to be part of that statistic. So I educated myself. I want that for my kids, too.

The former NBA player also doesn’t spoil his children with money despite his whopping net worth due to his glorious career.

My motto is ‘you have to get three degrees to touch some of my cheese.’

Shaunie Nelson once reported her and O’Neil’s son “could have died,” as he was diagnosed with a right anomalous coronary artery that causes “chest pain, heart failure or even sudden cardiac death.”

In October 2018, Shareef O’Neil had to undergo open-heart surgery to correct the abnormality.

[It’s] an artery that just grows in the wrong place. He was born with it. He could’ve died from it. They let us know Shareef needed open-heart surgery. That made my heart break. This is definitely the hardest thing we’ve ever had to face in our lives.
