Bilie Lourd's Heartbreaking Christmas Tribute To Mom Carrie Fisher And Grandma Debbie Reynolds

December 27, 2019 10:00

Billie Lourd is feeling some type of way this Christmas season and anyone who has had to cope with a major loss will totally understand.

A complicated mother-daughter relationship

Billie Lourd's mom was the famous Carrie Fisher. And as it turned out, having a celebrity mother wasn't the dream life that people might expect. In an article for TIME Magazine, Billie wrote that, for many years, she felt her mother's legendary role as Princess Leia on Star Wars was a threat to her.

Billie mentioned that, at the time, she didn't think it was fair for her mom to be the cool one and in a way, that caused some tension in their relationship.

Like any kid, I didn’t want my mom to be “hot” or “cool” – she was my mom. I was supposed to be the “cool,” “hot” one–not her!

As time went on, she realized the true power and purpose attached to the character.

I realized then that Leia is more than just a character. She’s a feeling. She is strength. She is grace. She is wit. She is femininity at its finest.

She even proudly later joined the cast of The Force Awakens, carrying on her mother's iconic tradition.

Some people carry on their family name, some people carry on holiday traditions–I was going to carry on the family hairstyle.

A sweet Christmas Tribute

It's now many years later and Billie still hasn't forgotten the special relationship she and her mother shared. Three years after Carrie and Debbie's death, and in honor of the Christmas holidays, the 27-year-old actress shared an Instagram post which included a throwback picture of herself as a baby, her mother, Carrie, and her grandmother, Debbie.

While wishing her over a million followers Happy holidays, she added that she was sending a special greeting to those who have had to cope with a loss.

Sending my love to everyone who has lost someone they loved and is missing them a little extra today.

Her message was that it's okay if Christmas isn't completely merry at this time but there's nothing wrong with having mixed feelings. Per her words, the important thing is to feel the good with the not so good.

Eat something delish they used to love. Put on one of their favorite songs. Tell a story about them. Cry about them. Call one of their friends you haven’t talked to in a while. Be kind and patient with yourself. Don’t grieve in silence. You’re not alone.

I’m tearing up.

Thanks for this. Lost my dad in September and I can’t quite find the Christmas joy I’ve always had.

@carrie.fisherig:

Happy Christmas to both of them, and to you.

Coping with her mother's death

This isn't the first time Billie Lourd has expressed her feelings about her mom's passing. Sadly, the Scream Queens alum had to deal with both the death of Carrie and Debbie in the same year, 2016.

She told Entertainment Tonight that being on American Horror Story: Cult actually helped her grieve these losses.

It honestly helped me process all of my emotions through these characters. Being able to cry for Winter helped me cry for myself. And it's been really healing and cathartic in an amazing way.

Other things Billie has said about her mom's death.

  • In the TIME magazine piece, she revealed, "losing my mom is the hardest thing I’ve ever been through."
  • She told TownandCountry in 2017 that she chose to honor her mom by following her own path: "I love being my mother’s daughter, and it’s something I always will be, but now I get to be just Billie."
  • To Ellen Degeneres, Billie discussed living in her mother's shadow; "It's a lot of pressure because she had such an incredible legacy, and now I have to uphold that and make it evolve in my own way."

Billie also once shared a video of herself singing her mom's favorite song.

Billie Lourd not only lost a mother when Carrie passed away. She lost her mentor and her inspiration. Even though Carrie was initially not on board with her daughter entering the acting world, Billie is doing fantastic as an actress today. She has appeared in a bunch of movies and television shows. And over the years, she has proven she's her mother's daughter while also respecting the legacy Carrie left behind.
