Henry Cavill Risked Possible Blindness And Dehydration For His 'The Witcher' Transformation

January 9, 2020

Henry Cavill is heartstoppingly handsome and this has been even more apparent for his role as Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series, The Witcher.

Like many actors, Henry had to make a lot of physical adjustments to himself to look more like his character. But away from all these changes, what does the actor really look like?

Physical info

Henry Cavill's 'The Witcher' role had him looking quite butch and tough. He seemed to be a perfect fit for it, though, considering his real-life body statistics.

According to the UK Express, the 36-year-old actor is 6ft 1in tall. It has also been reported that he weighs 203 pounds.

Henry Cavill's height and weight tell us that he already has the body of a Hollywood hunk.

Risking possible blindness for The Witcher

The actor has been pretty open about some of the decisions he has had to make to fit into his role in the series. For one thing, he admitted that he had to risk possible blindness due to the contact lenses he had to wear to look just like his character.

In an interview with Metro, Henry confessed that doctors warned him against the prolonged use of the colored contacts which were supposed to give his eyes the yellow-hue of Geralt's. He explained that the part of his eyes that were covered by the contacts should have been exposed to oxygen.

And so if you’re covering it up, you’re not getting any oxygen to it, and over a long period of time, you will do damage to your eyes. It’s just not worth it.

Henry didn't listen to his eye-technician who kept insisting that he shouldn't wear the contacts for long hours. He assumed she was being overly dramatic until he had an experience where he suffered an intense stinging and itchy eyes. This, left untreated, could have led to blindness.

The actor said:

So the contacts, as cool as they were, they did come with some challenges!

Risking dehydration

Apart from changing his hair and eye color, Henry also had to transform his whole body for his role. This required some extreme measures, as well, which included dehydration.

While appearing on The Graham Norton Show, the actor revealed that in the days leading to shooting his scenes, he would drastically reduce his water intake up to the point that on the day before, he won't even take any water at all.

He said his purpose was to ensure he didn't retain any water weight and his skin was completely lean.

Henry Cavill's 'The Witcher' workout

As for his workout, Henry revealed some of his methods to MensHealth.

  • He disclosed that he did what's known as fasted cardio which basically meant he had some mild training and workout on an empty stomach's. "It only 20 minutes, so it's not massively exhausting."
  • Henry admitted that he was in the best shape of his life thanks to working with Hollywood trainer Dave Rienzi.
  • Other training sessions he adopted included the stationary bike, high knees, lunges and so on.

Henry Cavill is a dedicated actor so no one can really fault him for going to the extremes to portray his character in the best way possible. Of course, he nailed the mannerism and tough-guy personality of his role perfectly. But he also ensured his body came to par too. Unfortunately, this meant that he had to take a few risks. The good news is that he was surrounded by experts who helped ensure he was alright.

Nevertheless, if you're thinking of giving these methods a try, it's very crucial you speak to a health practitioner first.
