Marlee Matlin, Deaf Mother Of Four, Thanks Her "Great Husband" For Helping Her With Their "Extended Family"

Marlee Matlin isn't really struggling with her children due to her deafness thanks to her husband. She lost all hearing in her right ear and 80% in her left ear at 18 months old.

I learned to speak first, and then later, to sign. I have never really known what it was like to hear, so I can't compare hearing aids to normal hearing. Hearing is something that I'm really not familiar with.

Throughout all her life, Marlee Matlin has been using hearing aids, as, without them, she cannot hear absolute anything.

Although the Oscar-winning actress cannot hear, she is fortunate to have quite a big family. Marlee Matlin's four children — two daughters, Sarah and Isabelle, and two sons, Brendon and Tyler — are hearing, just like her husband, who continually helps her raise their offsprings.

Being a parent who is deaf does not present any more challenges than if I can hear only because I don't let it. That's been my mantra my whole life—that the real "handicap" of deafness does not lie in the ear; it lies in the mind.

Marlee Matlin's family speaks and signs, and she, therefore, has no apparent problems with hearing or speaking. Instead, she is just worried about her children, as any regular mum.

Instead, my challenges are making sure that they are safe, well taken care of, and, most of all, loved. Obviously, there are challenges for me because I have four children, but I am fortunate in that I have a great husband and extended family, and we all support each other.

All Marlee's children learned how to speak "signs" at different stages of their lives, but the actress and her husband, Burbank police officer Kevin Grandalski, use a great deal of speech at home. So communication is not a real deal for the American actress.

Though they speak more than they sign because mom speaks a great deal at home, they are comfortable with learning new signs when I teach them.

The American actress has been married to her husband, Kevin Grandalski, since 1994. They've been happy and committed to each other since ever, and their wedding was somewhat adorable — the couple exchanged their romantic vows in a sign language.

Marlee and Kevin were both 28 years old at the time of marriage, and they've been married for almost three decades so far. How fantastic!

On the couple's first date, Burbank police officer took her to a secluded spot in a Los Angeles park for a picnic lunch. Months later, on his birthday (February 13), Kevin took Marlee back there and proposed with a three-carat diamond ring. Matlin, who doesn't mince words, sais she wants "as many children as my uterus can handle."

Marlee Matlin may not be a hearing person, but she has one of the greatest blessings in this life — a fantastic family. It's evident how much she is delighted to have such a devoted husband and adorable kids.
