Gender Identity Therapist Praises Kate Hudson And Charlize Theron For Taking Genderless Approach To Raising Their Children

These days more and more parents are taking a genderless approach to raising children, which means that a child is being brought up free of traditional gender stereotypes and allowed to freely form their own identity. Many celebrities also adopt this method, including Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie, and Kate Hudson.

What do Charlize Theron and Kate Hudson say about gender-neutral parenting?

Charlize Theron's son Jackson often makes headlines for appearing in dresses, and his famous mom fully supports his choices.

As Charlize explained to DailyMail:

[My kids] were born who they are and exactly where in the world both of them get to find themselves as they grow up, and who they want to be, is not for me to decide. My job as a parent is to celebrate them and to love them and to make sure that they have everything they need in order to be what they want to be. And I will do everything in my power for my kids to have that right and to be protected within that.

Kate Hudson turned to genderless parenting after her daughter Rani was born. She explained her approach in an Instagram post. Hudson wrote:

Recently someone asked me something along the lines of, if having and raising a girl is different from boys. My response was simple. Not really. This whole click bait tactic of saying I'm raising my daughter to be 'genderless' is silly and frankly doesn't even make sense.

Kate further explained that she was simply ”re-focusing the conversation in a direction that could exist outside of the female stereotype" and added:

I raise and will continue to raise my children, both my boys and girl to feel free to be exactly who they want to be. To feel confident in their life choices and feel loved and supported no matter what.

An expert on gender identity therapy praises the actresses

New York City-based therapist Tanya Koifman spoke with Bravo TV about Charlize and Kate's parenting and praised the actresses for making it mainstream. Tanya said the following about Theron:

It is so wonderful when celebrities such as Charlize openly not only accept, but embrace, their child for who they are. When people see celebrities embracing their transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming children, it sends the right message to the public, and it can help lead to greater visibility and acceptance, and hopefully a safer existence for transgender people.

As for Hudson's case, Koifman said it's sad that Kate had to defend her parenting on social media, saying that it's difficult for society to accept this new approach, but as long as celebrities like her stay confident and proud, it really helps the LGBTQ+ community.

The problem is, people have been in hiding because of the lack of social acceptance. Being trans or non-binary is not a mental illness. There’s something wrong with society for not embracing folks for whoever they are. So for Kate Hudson to feel like she had to defend her parenting — too bad she ever felt like she needed to defend herself. There’s more visibility when it’s celebrities speaking out about this.
