The Princess of Wales' sudden death on August 31, 1997, had the nation, and the world, reeling. On September 6th of the same year, exactly a week after the horrific car crash that took her life, her funeral was held.

Since Princess Diana's funeral, Elton John won't sing the song in front of her sons

In an interview with Billboard, Elton John said that he will not sing Candle in the Wind in front of the late Princess Diana's sons, William and Harry.

He told the publication that he preferred not to have made the record at all, despite its chart-topping success at the time. He would rather have his friend still alive but he had to accept how things turned out.

The singer confirmed that the song raised 37 million pounds for Diana's foundation because he gave up his writing credits.

It was a memento of grief and love for her.

He then went on to add that he didn't play the song on tour for a couple of years "because it was too close to home."

Other than at Princess Diana’s funeral, I’ve never, ever played it in front of Prince William or Prince Harry. Even the Marilyn Monroe version, I wouldn’t play it in front of them.
