What is a scar?

A scar is basically a natural form of our body’s regenerative ability. When the dermis (the deeper layer of the skin) is damaged, the body will use collagen to heal the wound, which can result in a scar. The principle is simple: the more collagen is used, the more visible the scar will be. Hence, it is important to help your body heal the wound faster.

There are several types of scars, including:

  1. Atrophic scars look flat and depressed if compared to the regular skin. Such scars often appear darker than the rest of your skin. Typical examples of atrophic scars are acne scars and chickenpox scars.
  2. Keloid scars look raised, thick and puffy. Such scars can overgrow the healthy tissue. Keloid scars appear as a result of aggressive healing.
  3. Hypertrophic scars also characterized by excess tissue like keloid ones. However, hypertrophic scars do not grow beyond the damaged area of the skin.
  4. Contracture scars often appear after a large area of the skin being damaged, usually from burns. Such scars are light, shiny, and can restrict movement.

What are the remedies?

Unfortunately, there’s no way you can “delete” a scar completely at home. Even best cosmetology clinics often have troubles with removing scars completely. Depending on the type of a scar, it can become lighter and less visible. These home remedies can help you with that:

1. Aloe vera

2. Vitamin E

You can use vitamin E in capsules. Just squeeze the oil inside the capsule on your scar and massage thoroughly for 10 minutes. More than one capsule might be needed for the full coverage. Rinse with warm water after 20 minutes. It is recommended to repeat the procedure 3 times per day. Vitamin E is a great treatment for any scars.

3. Honey

You can use honey for keloid and hypertrophic scars. Just cover your scar with honey before going to bed. Wrap and leave the scar for the night. Rinse the scar with warm water in the morning and repeat every day. It needs a lot of time and patience for changes in scar to appear.

4. Coconut oil

Another great treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scars is coconut oil. Hit a few tablespoons of the oil, so it becomes liquid. Apply on the scar and massage it for 10 minutes. You don’t have to rinse it, as the coconut oil is highly beneficial for your skin in general. Repeat the procedure at least twice a day.

5. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is great for keloid and hypertrophic scars and is not recommended to use against the other types. Create a mixture of 4 tablespoons of distilled water and 2 tablespoons of the vinegar. Use a cotton pad to generously moisten your scar with the liquid. Leave it for the night and rinse in the morning.

6. Lemon

Everybody knows about bleaching properties of the lemon. Apparently, the fruit can also do some good work against keloid and hypertrophic scars. Squeeze the lemon juice on your scar and rub it in with the juicy side. Let it soak for 10 minutes and rinse with water. Don’t forget to keep away from the sun while the lemon juice is still on your skin, as you can get really bad burns.

7. Tea tree oil

Surely, some people perceive scars as a defect or deformity, but this should not be this way. Scarring is a natural process of your body healing. The remedies described above, however, can help you make your scars less visible. Take care and stay positive!
