An 80-year marriage

A 106-year-old man named John Henderson and his 105-year-old wife Charlotte have been declared as the oldest couple in the world by the Guinness Book of Records.

This incredible announcement comes just one month before the couple was due to celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary.

According to DailyMail, John and Charlotte tied the knot during the Great Depression in 1939.

So what's the secret to their lasting marriage? John told CNN that it's all about living "life in moderation" and being "cordial to your spouse."

The couple met when they were both at the University of Texas in 1934. John was on the football team while Charlotte was taking classes to become a teacher.

Despite their age, John and Charlotte are still healthy and try to exercise regularly.

How to have a long-lasting marriage

There is a lot of advice out there for couples who want to keep their love alive for decades like these two. But it all comes down to two people who are determined to stay together, respect each other and are willing to work through their conflict like two matured individuals.

Of course, other things like making time for each other, holding hands and doing new things together do help keep the marriage fun and interesting.

The truth remains that not all marriages will go the distance. But couples should always remember that the ones that work are the ones where those involved put in the effort to make it so. It will not happen by magic. And who knows, you and your spouse just may be the duo to break John and Charlotte's record someday.
