A study from the New York University School of Medicine found that the risks of pregnant women suffering from heart attacks had risen by 25% between 2002 and 2014. The grim statistics further revealed that out of 20 women that suffered a heart attack during pregnancy, 1 died during their stay in hospital!

Mother to twins survived 2 heart attacks during pregnancy

When she was pregnant with her twins, Krystle Evans was a happy woman as her twins would make her a mom to 4. But what Krystle never imagined was that she would get a heart attack, something that would threaten her health and that of her 2 babies.

The first time it happened, Krystle was at home in Dallas, Texas, relaxing on a lazy Saturday.

The mom, who was then 8 months pregnant, remembers that out of nowhere, she felt her chest get tight. This episode, where she experienced intense shortness of breath that forced her to gasp for air, lasted for 20 minutes!

Since it was the first time, Krystle dismissed it thinking that perhaps, the twins were putting pressure on her ribs. But the next day, a Sunday, she found herself struggling to breathe as the family was driving home from church.

I started getting very nauseated. Then my whole left arm went numb… I was in a whole bunch of pain.

After telling her doctor how she was feeling, she was advised to rush to the emergency room where she found out that she had experienced 2 separate heart attacks!

Krystle, who had no history of cardiovascular disease in her family, was shocked that this could happen to her. Speaking to NBC 5, Dr. Jerry Luciani, Krystle’s OB/GYN, advised that paying attention to the symptoms can make a very big difference.

It's an extremely rare event, but you really need to pay attention to symptoms like chest pain and tightness and numbness in your arm.

When a woman is pregnant with twins, the amount of blood her heart pumps every minute is 15% higher to a typical pregnancy, meaning that her heart can be strained. Lucky for Krystle, the problem was discovered early and at 34 weeks, she gave birth to a beautiful boy and a girl.

Signs of a heart attack

While predicting a heart attack before it occurs is tough, statistics show that almost two-thirds of women who die of coronary heart disease had no prior symptoms. Some of the symptoms that you can watch out for include:

  • Pain, pressure, or discomfort in the chest
  • Lightheadedness, nausea, and dizziness
  • Pain in the jaw, neck or back
  • Shortness of breath,
  • Feeling uncharacteristically fatigued or unwell.

Being aware and listening to your body is the only way to ensure that you avoid risky health conditions, especially when you are pregnant. Never assume any symptom, no matter how mild it might be.
