The singer was heartbroken when her beloved René died in 2016. But he tried to support her and encourage her to continue doing what she loves even in the final months of his life.

Céline recalls how her husband begged her to keep singing

René had been battling throat cancer, and he and Céline knew what was in store for him. Knowing that they didn’t have long, the singer wanted to be by her ailing husband’s side all the time, and she wasn’t even sure if she would ever sing again.

But René didn’t want his wife to live in pain and sadness and encouraged her. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the singer recalled how her husband gave her strength:

If you look at the definition of courage, it's a big, big word. It's an important word and everything that I went through the last three years for example, even before any past, I was not even sure if I was going to go and sing again. But [René] would want me to sing again, so I went back and forth and it was hard.

René let his wife know that seeing her perform would only make him happier, so she did exactly that. She said:

I wanted to be by his bedside, and he really wanted me to go back on stage. He wanted to see me perform again and I did. It was hard but I did and he could let go after, peacefully.

How she managed to cope with René’s passing

It was hard for Céline to get used to life without her love, but she managed to cope with the help of all the “strength and power and positivity” René gave her before his passing, she said in a new interview with GMA.

Most importantly, she had to remain strong for her three children. Watching them grow up, Céline knows she and her husband did an amazing job raising them:

The kids are growing, and I see them. And I look at them and I'm like, ‘Wow ... we've done a great job.’

The singer also shared what she would say to others who are going through a loss:

You cannot stop living. Go forward. And today's the first day of the beginning of my life, because I know that, I don't have to worry.
