Kelly Catlin was a young woman with a bright future ahead of her. Clatin, a professional racing cyclist, won many golden and silver medals in serious competitions, including the 2016 Summer Olympics.
However, not many knew that behind the smiling facade was hiding a deeply wounded soul. Kelly took her own life at just 23 years old after a long battle with depression. But what led her to such a heartbreaking decision?
Possible reasons for Catlin’s demise
Kelly’s sister, Christine Catlin, revealed that the three-time cycling world champion had been suffering from depression after having concussion months before she ended her life on March 7.
Christine revealed to the Washington Post that Kelly broke her arm and suffered a concussion which had a very serious negative effect on her emotional state. She explained:
She couldn’t train as well as she used to. She had really bad headaches and was sensitive to light. Then she tried to commit suicide in January … she had written this lengthy email [to her family] and said her thoughts were racing all the time.
After reading that email Catlin’s family felt that something was wrong so they called the police, who managed to save Kelly that time. But the cyclist was in a very dark place and she couldn’t manage to get out of it.
It’s been proved that concussions can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which can show itself in depression and mood swings. Kelly’s passing might have happened due to a combination of overtraining, depression and not fully understanding how her concussion affects her mental health.
