Vogue's editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, has implied she is not interested in having the current US First Lady Melania Trump featured in the fashion magazine. Melania, who is a former fashion model, has not been featured on the cover of the magazine since moving into the White House, while recent Democratic first ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton have both graced the cover.
Anna, in a CNN interview with Christiane Amanpour, commented about photographing first ladies on her magazine's cover. She, as a Democrat in her political views, hinted that she wouldn't put a photo of Melania on the magazine's cover.
When Amanpour asked the fashion editor why Vogue puts first ladies and female leaders on its coveted cover, Anna said she and her team profile women with stances on issues that they can agree with. She said:
You have to stand up for what you believe in and you have to take a point of view. We profile women in the magazine that we believe in the stand that they’re taking on issues we support them, we feel that they are leaders.
However, Amanpour pointed out to Anna that she heavily features Democrats over Republicans saying:
You’re overtly political in your profiles and in what you stand for.
Melania gives the best response
Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s representative, hit back at Anna following her comment to not feature Melania on its cover. The spokesperson to the first lady told Fox News that being on the cover of the fashion magazine doesn't define her, as Melania has been there, done that long before she became the first lady. She said:
Her role as first lady of the United States and all that she does is much more important than some superficial photo shoot and cover. This just further demonstrates how biased the fashion magazine industry is, and shows how insecure and small-minded Anna Wintour really is. Unfortunately, Mrs. Trump is used to this kind of divisive behavior.
In 2005, Melania appeared on the cover of Vogue when she got married to then real-estate mogul and now current President of the United States Donald Trump.
