On Sunday, the actor was honoring Al Pacino at the American Icon Awards and went off-the-cuff to criticize Donald Trump, like he had done multiple times before during public speeches.

De Niro said:

The individual who currently purports to lead America is not worthy of any tribute. Unless you think of his impeachment and imprisonment as a sort of tribute. And that's how you can 'Make America Great Again.'

The remark elicited mixed reactions from the public as well as political commentators. Fox News hosts, known as ardent defenders of Trump, had a few choice words for the actor.

Fox News goes after De Niro

Sean Hannity said:

[De Niro] is just a has-been actor that has too much time on his hands.

Tucker Carlson and Mark Steyn agree. Steyn told Carlson:

They should have best cranky, embittered grandpa 40 years past his acting best award ‘cause he’d be a shoo-in for that.

To which Carlson responded:

He’d definitely be in the running, though I would argue there are some other contenders.

But what does the public think?

People on social media are not impressed

Many social media users are saying De Niro should stay out of things he doesn’t know enough about, calling him an out-of-touch actor who is well past his prime and desperate for attention.

Here are a few tweets about the actor’s latest attack on the President:

And what do you think? Is De Niro justified in his opinion or not?
