Last week, Meghan Markle broke with the royal tradition once again by having a baby shower in NYC.

Among those present were the Duchess’ celebrity friends, including Serena Williams, Amal Clooney, and CBS anchor Gayle King. The gathering was a very small and private affair, according to reports.

However, one can’t help but wonder: what do members of the royal family think of this? Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, has some thoughts.

Prince William is angry at Meghan, Burrell says

Burrell says Prince William is angry at Meghan not for having a baby shower, but for the flashy manner she chose to have it.

Burrell describes Duchess Meghan as a complete opposite of Duchess Catherine, who guards her family’s privacy carefully.

He told The Sun:

You will not see antics like this from the Cambridge family, there is no way.

They are so British, they are so well-behaved. Dare I say they are so well-behaved they are not as sparkly or lively or vivacious as Meghan.

On the other hand, Meghan loves to make a show and doesn’t know the difference between 'royal' and 'celebrity', Burrell says.

He told The Sun:

Prince William tries to keep his family out of the spotlight, so the fact Meghan’s baby shower was so flaunted will be frustrating for him, and it is causing a rift in the family.

He also implied Meghan is a hypocrite, saying she could have donated to charity the vast sum of money spent on her baby shower instead of having a lavish celebration.

Meghan didn’t break the protocol, another expert says

Meghan did something out of the ordinary by having a celebrity baby shower in NYC, but she didn’t break the protocol. Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter says people are confusing 'tradition' with 'protocol'.

Arbiter told Today:

Protocol only refers to etiquette and behavior at diplomatic events and state occasions. Protocol refers to, who walks in a room first? Who sits next to whom? Who makes the first speech?

She also stressed the fact that Meghan wouldn’t have flown to the U.S. to have a baby shower if it had raised her in-laws’ eyebrows:

There is nothing that stipulates she couldn't have a baby shower, and frankly, Harry, and the rest of the royal family would be very happy for her to honor her American traditions and customs. She wouldn't be in the States having a shower if it was frowned upon.

And what do you think?
