Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness are parents to two wonderful kids, son Oscar and daughter Ava.
The couple’s road to parenthood wasn’t a walk in the park. After struggling to conceive naturally and failed IVFs, Hugh and Deborra-Lee realized that having a biological child wasn’t in the cards for them and decided to adopt.
It seems like it was just yesterday that the happy parents brought Oscar and Ava home, and now the kids are just a step away from adulthood! In a new interview with People, Hugh opened up about what it’s like raising two teenagers.
Hugh Jackman on parenthood
The X-Men star admits that raising teenagers can be challenging at times. Oscar is 18 and Ava is 13, and you have to find an entirely new approach when one kid is almost a young adult and one is in early teens:
My son is about to leave high school, and my daughter is about to go into high school. It’s amazing to just have conversations with them. But it took a bit of readjusting. It went from ‘Hey, guys, these are the rules, we don’t do that,’ to having to give them reasons why.
At the same time, raising teens presents new possibilities for family fun, and the actor says enjoying the same movies is a plus:
It’s nice to go to the movies and see something you both want to see. It’s no longer ‘Oh good, let’s watch Shrek for the 120th time.’ I mean, I love Shrek but not 120 times.
All in all, being a parent changes your whole outlook. Hugh told People he learned a lot since he became a father:
When your focus is innately, deeply, one hundred percent become these kids in your life and their well-being it just seems to put everything into perspective. Being a father has taught me so much.
The secret of Hugh and Deb’s lasting marriage
Of course, none of it would have been possible without Deborra-Lee. She and Hugh have just celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary, and the secret of their lasting union is strikingly simple.
Hugh told People it’s all about honesty and openness:
People talk about intimacy and assume that means in the bedroom. Of course it is that, but really, intimacy is being able to share everything together—good, bad, fears, successes. Deb and I had that from the beginning. We’ve always been completely ourselves with each other.
They really are an exemplary Hollywood couple and exemplary parents: down-to-earth and unspoiled by fame. That’s why Hugh and Deb are one of our favorite couples!
