Prince Philip sure won't be missing out on some family fun time during the holidays. There were some uncertainties there for a little bit but things are looking up now.

Prince Philip's health

One drawback of aging is that it's sometimes accompanied by health issues. Recently, 98-year-old Prince Philip had fans worried after reports emerged that he had been hospitalized. Several sources revealed that Queen Elizabeth's husband had been feeling unlike himself for a while and didn't have a lot of energy. Insiders claimed he was spending a lot of time resting due to his health problems.

Questions and rumors about his health intensified especially considering the fact that he hasn't been seen in public since the May 18 wedding of Lady Gabriella Windsor and Thomas Kingston. It makes sense that he has been laying low for a while now, though, considering the fact that he officially retired from royal duties in 2017.

Most recently, the Buckingham Palace revealed that he was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital on December 20 due to a "preexisting condition."

Back home for Christmas

The news that Prince Philip had to go to the hospital in the middle of the holiday festivities had people wondering if that's where he would spend Christmas. But thankfully, this wasn't the case.

A subsequent statement released by Buckingham Palace and obtained by UsWeekly revealed that the Duke of Edinburgh was released from the hospital on Christmas Eve. He was said to have been discharged by his doctors and he got to return to Sandringham to join his family for the Yuletides.

The statement read:

His Royal Highness would like to thank everyone who sent their good wishes.

People were generally glad to hear that Prince Philip is doing well and back with his family for the holidays.

Why Queen Elizabeth didn't visit her husband

Her Majesty received some backlash after fans were offended that she was at Sandringham while her husband was hospitalized. People said she should have at least gone to visit him.

Royal expert, Victoria Arbiter, however, explained that if the Queen were to visit the hospital, the security measures required would have been terribly disruptive to the facility and those in it.

Arbiter opined that Queen Elizabeth was probably considering the welfare of patients undergoing treatment and neither she nor her husband would want a big fuss to be made over a precautionary hospital visit.

Other hospital admissions over the years

Prince Philip has had to spend some time in the hospital over the years due to several different issues.

  • In June 2013, he underwent exploratory abdominal surgery. He was released a few days later.
  • In June 2017, one month after retiring from royal duties, he was hospitalized due to an infection.
  • In April 2018, he was, once again admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London to undergo a hip replacement surgery.

We have to say, Prince Philip is a very strong and brave man. Aging sure takes a lot out of anyone but so far, the Duke has been able to bounce back beautifully. And we bet his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were glad to see him back after his hospital stay. Let's hope he continues to stay strong and healthy.
