Prince William Is Not Supposed To Fly On The Same Plane With His Children, But He Does It Anyway. Why?

July 19, 2018

When Prince William travels overseas to perform his royal duties, you can often see him descending from the plane with his wife and children. And you may find it surprising that the family breaks royal protocol every time they travel together.

There are many rules that the British royal family has to follow, and some of them may appear ridiculous and obsolete, but this one actually makes sense. According to royal protocol, the heirs to the throne shouldn’t fly on the same plane. If, God forbid, an accident happens, the rule is in place to make sure that the lineage is not disrupted.

Prince William is second in line to the throne, Prince George is third, Princess Charlotte is fourth, and baby Prince Louis is fifth.

This rule actually isn’t official, but Prince William has to ask permission from the Queen to travel together with his children. Speaking to the BBC, a spokesperson to the Royal Family said:

While there is no official rule on this, and royal heirs have travelled together in the past, it is something that the Queen has the final say on.

Prince William broke this rule for the first time when he flew to Australia and New Zealand with Prince George, who was still a baby at the moment. Of course, the Queen allowed this.

It’s easy to understand Prince William’s feelings and motives here. His children are still very young, and they may get nervous if they are on a flight without their dad. As a father, Prince William wants to always be there for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and his youngest one, Prince Louis. Also, air travel is much safer now than it used to be in its early years. We wish Prince William and his family many more safe travels!
