She played the enterprising oldest daughter of the Gallagher family, who looks after her siblings after their mom disappears and is seen as the glue that holds the show together.

While talking to Shape magazine about her stand on body positivity she opened up about her decision to leave the show now on her own terms.

Her character is not getting killed off, but she wants to leave while she still loves the show.

I want to leave the show while I still love it, and I know the door is open to come back if that feels right. I’m also extremely proud of what I was able to accomplish off-screen, with my negotiation for equal pay.

Emmy says she's sad to be leaving the show and the castmates who have become family, but she’s looking forward to writing, directing, and acting opportunities.

Fans of the show have been reacting with mixed feelings. They are sad to see her go and most people believe her decision to leave is the end of the show. The second half of her final season will air on January 20.
