Custody Battle Destroyed Mark Harmon's Relationship With His Late Older Sister

September 4, 2019

Television star Mark Harmon's older sister, Kristin Harmon Nelson, passed away from a heart attack at the age of 72 on April 27th, 2018. Just like her younger brother, Kristin used to be considered a TV royalty owing to her role in the long-running sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in the 60s.

After retiring from acting in the 80s, Kristin Harmon Nelson found her calling in painting. She even had an autobiography published, Out Of My Mind, which contained Kristin's paintings and pages from her diary. After the artist's passing, her daughter, Tracy Kristine Nelson, posted a touching tribute to her mother, highlighting her life's work and artistry.

Kristin held a relatively low-key profile, so no one talked much about her relationship with her family, Mark Harmon in particular. However, as it turned out, there were some skeletons in the Harmon family's closet.

The nasty battle between siblings

Once Kristin ended her acting career and divorced her husband, Rick Nelson, in the 80s, she had a tough time leaving old habits behind. Harmon admitted that she and her ex-husband led the hippie life filled with alcohol and drugs.

Kristin sought help for her substance abuse and checked in the rehab in 1987.

Despite her attempts to get better, her brother, Mark Harmon, had seen enough at that point to seek custody of Kristin's son Sam. According to the 13-year-old's psychiatrist testimony, his mother prevented him from seeing his other siblings and had a negative emotional impact on the boy with her substance abuse problem.

Upon being released from rehab, Kristin fought to preserve the custody of her son and won. Mark agreed to the outcome with the condition of him being granted visitation rights.

The conflict was put to bed, but, according to the reports, the Harmon children never truly reconciled their relationship.

Apart from Kristin Harmon Nelson, the NCIS star also had a second sister, Kelly, a 69-year-old interior decorator.
