Why does Seal have scars?

How did Seal get these scars on his face? There have been a lot of rumors surrounding their cause. Some wild guesses include a knife fight, a car accident, and a wolf’s bite. But they couldn’t be further from the truth: Seal has discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), an autoimmune inflammatory condition that affects the skin.

The singer was diagnosed with DLE in his early 20s. He has a localized form of the condition, which usually affects the skin above the neck. Thanks to the timely diagnosis, Seal manages to keep his DLE under control. As he recorded a charity single with other artists for the 70th anniversary of the NHS, Seal took a moment to praise his country’s health service. He told Metro:

‘I grew up with this health service and it became particularly handy for me when I was 21 and I developed lupus. And if it hadn’t of been for our country having a national health service we wouldn’t have been able to detect it in time, and who knows what might have happened.’

What is discoid lupus erythematosus?

Discoid lupus erythematosus is a form of lupus that affects the skin. People who have the condition develop inflamed, scaly patches on their skin which may cause scarring, hair loss, and other changes. These patches usually appear on the face and scalp, but sometimes they can be seen on other body parts.

Factors that may increase the risk of developing DLE include heredity, smoking, exposure to sunlight, and having a dark skin color. Women suffer from this condition more often than men.

DLE is a lifelong condition, but it can be kept in check with oral and topical medicines and measures to prevent flare-ups, such as wearing sunscreen and quitting smoking.

No matter what, Seal is an amazing singer. Do you agree?
