According to Guinness World Records, the Duchess of Alba was the most titled aristocrat in the world. Not only that, with dozen castles and relatives like Winston Churchill and King James II, she was the richest woman in Spain.

Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva, who probably also had the longest name in history, didn’t even have to kneel to the pop.

However, she gave away all of her privileges, as well as her entire fortune, to marry the man she loved.

Giving everything away

The 18th Duchess of Alba gave away all her money, (approximately $3.5 billion), to her children so that she could marry Alfonso Díez, a minor civil servant 24 years younger than her.

Diez had known the noblewoman for 30 years and, reportedly, saved her from depression. Despite the massive age difference, he fell in love, proposed to her and she said yes.

However, the Duchess’ six children were against her plans to marry Alfonso. But she was not ready to give up. She overcame her children’s opposition by giving them their inheritance in advance.

The noblewoman was certain Diez didn’t want her money as she once said:

Alfonso doesn't want anything. All he wants is me.

Her first wedding to the father of her children, Pedro Luis Martínez de Irujo y Artacoz, was deemed as “the most expensive in the world,” overshadowing Queen Elizabeth II’s nuptials.

But her very last wedding to Alfonso was considerably less costly. The 85-year-old Duchess danced flamenco with her new husband and enjoyed every moment of it.

Despite the age difference, they proved that love is possible even at such a solid age, and that money are not as important as other people thought. Sadly, their union lasted only 3 years as she passed away in 2014. Diaz proved he only wanted Cayetana and nothing else.
