People in difficult situations need help. Sometimes we just can't rely on our friends and relatives, in such cases, the government can offer assistance. Welfare system is a federal program aimed to support families with income that falls below the poverty line. In 2019, that line was set at $25,750 for a family of four. In order to receive welfare, the family must prove that their income is lower than the target. The welfare program helps many families to pull through financial problems.

It is incredibly helpful to many people, but, unfortunately, some tend to abuse the system, thus taking away from those in need. Here is one of those welfare abuse stories.

Welfare fraud: mother of 4 has been living on welfare for 12 years

Meet Kiara! Kiara is a mom of four children. The 30-year-old woman has been living off welfare for over 12 years now. Moreover, the woman doesn't think she needs to work: She says:

I'm comfortable with it and I feel like I don't need [a job] because I get a check from the government every month.

When asked whether she thinks that she's cheating the system, Kiara replied just "Nah". When she needs more money, she sells food stamps to get some cash.

It's important to add that the woman is physically and mentally capable for a job, however, she just chooses not to.

Welfare statistics

Although this case might seem just an exception, we don't know exactly how many families really need support. In 2012 around 35% of the US population relied on welfare. But no one can answer the question: how many families are actually cheating the system and taking away from those who are unable to work.

What are your thoughts on the situation? Do you think Kiara and others like her are wrong to use the system like that?
