Many public figures probably cherish a dream of being immortalized in stone one day. On the one hand, it wouldn’t be the same if you order the monument yourself. On the other hand, if you wait for others to do it, you don’t have a say in how an independent artist portrays you.
David Beckham, for instance, was utterly displeased with this ultimate sign of recognition. And there is one person behind this hilarious prank – TV host James Corden!
A bronze statue of legendary midfielder David Beckham was presented on March 3 in a grand ceremony in Los Angeles. It had been commissioned by L. A. Galaxy soccer club, for which David played from 2007 to 2012.
The full-scale sculpture recreates one of the most famous Beckham’s poses.
Shortly before this, James Corden decided to prank the football player with a fake last-minute preview. Realizing that David hadn’t seen the real statue yet, he ordered a monument that was much less flattering – it had a huge butt, long arms and face, as well as offset eyes.
The fake preview was held in a rented warehouse with hired actors all over the place. The role of the creator of the masterpiece was portrayed by comedian Maz Jobrani.
Upon the soccer ace’s arrival, he was surrounded by annoying ‘fans’ with cameras. At first, David was absolutely delighted with all the attention, but once the wraps were removed, there was no sign of a smile on his face.
– It’s slightly different from what it was when I saw it in Chicago, though.
– I’ve tried to capture you in motion, you see?
– Yeah, but when we spoke in Chicago, there was ‘catch me in motion’ but also making me… I mean, look at my chin!
But most of all, David was displeased with the view from behind.
– Look at my bum!
– I tell you that in motion that’s how it looks.
– It definitely doesn’t look like that.
When David was told that they would not have time to remake the statue before the ceremony, he looked completely gutted and even got angry.
It's lucky my kids aren’t coming over, because if my kids were to see this, I think they would just cry, to be honest.
And how relieved David must have been when he realized it was all a practical joke!
Earlier, a bronze bust of another famous soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo was placed at the airport in Madeira. The monument, which was immediately dubbed ‘the worst ever football statue’ on the internet, is still the object of endless jokes and memes.
Well, David Beckham is going to remember this prank for a long time! What do you think about this prank? Was it too much?
