The other day, as part of her first overseas tour, the Duchess of Sussex attended a welcome reception and dinner with the King of Tonga in a wedding-like dress by a famous Irish designer. Its distinctive features were a graceful silhouette and succinct white gold studs that added particular charm to the dress. However, it was something else in Meghan’s look that attracted the greater attention of the Internet community: the super shiny skin of her arms.

The explanation turned out to be quite simple: since the countries of Oceania are plagued with the Zika virus and the Duchess is expecting her first child, she is taking all necessary precautions. In particular, she is using a repellent, hence the 'shining.'

The main carriers of the Zika virus are mosquitoes and other insects. In most people, the disease is asymptomatic, but first signs may appear 3 to 14 days after being infected, and persist for 2 to 7 days.

Symptoms include:

  • pain in muscles and joints;
  • headache;
  • conjunctivitis;
  • fever;
  • feeling generally unwell;
  • rash.

Thus, the Zika virus can be confused with numerous other diseases, which is why many people don’t even know that they have been infected.

It is also transmitted via various means:

  • through blood transfusion or organ transplantation from an infected person;
  • from mother to child during pregnancy;
  • through unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person.

The Zika virus is especially dangerous during pregnancy. It can cause various pathologies of the development of the fetus and newborn; in particular, microcephaly and neurological disorders. Among other risks, the most dangerous are the complications in the course of pregnancy, such as miscarriage, premature birth, and stillbirth. For adults, the Zika virus is fraught with the development of Guillain-Barre syndrome, neuropathy, and myelitis.

There is no vaccine or treatment again this infection. Therefore, prevention is the only way. Preventive measures include:

  • refraining from visiting countries with a high risk of infection during pregnancy;
  • wearing light-colored clothes during journeys, which maximally cover the surface of the skin from potential insect bites, and hats (wide-brimmed hats are preferable);
  • using mosquito nets;
  • applying mosquito repellents on the skin and clothes.

As you can see, Duchess Meghan followed the recommendations as best as possible. Even though her skin did look a bit odd because of the repellent, she was still fabulous, wasn’t she?
