Calm your child down!

– every mom has been told this at least once in her life. Because naughty children cause problems and make people around them uncomfortable. And not only strangers, but especially their own parents. And then the parents, yielding to someone’s opinion and always disapproving society, often take measures which don’t have a healthy impact on their child.

Let's have a look at the ways that can calm children down or prevent them from being naughty:

1. Get your child used to silence

Children often shout to express their emotions, ranging from excitement to indignation. That’s why you should try to teach your child to talk calmly. Respond only when you are addressed in a calm and quiet voice. Of course, this process requires some time and effort, but in the end, the results will be worth it.

2. Socialize your child

Children can make noise and shout because they are used to doing so at home. If they rarely visit public places, children can’t realize that there are other people in the world except for their family. Teach them how to behave properly in a particular public place. Arrange your life in such a way that your child often visits playgrounds, parks, shops, cafes, and other places — then your son or daughter will have a chance to learn to be a part of society and accept social behavioral norms.

3. Give your child an opportunity to explore something new

Children are by nature very curious, so when they get into a new environment – for example, an airplane or train – they feel an urge to explore it. Allow your child to examine the passenger compartment under your supervision, and only after that hand them a coloring book or turn on cartoons on your tablet.

4. Change the activity

Many children find it impossible to do the same thing for a long time. So try to keep things for various kinds of entertainment close at hand: a puzzle, a coloring book, or a construction set. Don’t miss the chance to teach your child something new: tell them about the place you are in, or about the people who accompany you, in case you are on a trip – even about the city or country you are visiting.

5. Ask questions and explain your position

Unreasoned punishment or categorical refusal will only hurt your child’s feelings. So explain your reasoning calmly but clearly. Or ask your child questions to find out what exactly are they throwing a tantrum about. Find a compromise together.

6. Don’t forget about your child!

Noisy behavior can simply be an attempt to attract your attention. You have to find time for your child even if you are busy. A mere 5 minutes of your attention can prevent them from giving you troubles.

And if you witness a child throwing tantrums or misbehaving, remember that it is always easier to criticize than to help. Criticizing won’t lead to anything good and can even start a conflict with the naughty child’s parents. So show restraint or, if possible, offer assistance. Sometimes good advice from a stranger can be a lifesaver!
