There are so many beautiful words that describe lips: rosy, full, sensual, juicy...

We don’t hear even remotely as much about dry and chapped lips. This problem is particularly common in the cold season when frost and blasts of wind can dry out the sensitive skin. Most often, this problem is solved with the help of cosmetic balms.

What causes dry lips besides the wind?

If your lips are dry regardless of the season, then it is time to take better care of your health. This may be a sign of diseases, such as:

1. Allergies

This can be your body's reaction to certain foods or cosmetics that you use.

2. Dehydration

Lack of water in the body disrupts the balance of vitamins and minerals, which affects the skin and, first of all, the lips, because the skin there is very thin and sensitive.

3. Breathing through the mouth

It is natural for people to breathe through the nose. If it is blocked for some reason (due to a cold or allergy) and the person switches to mouth breathing, the mucous surface of the lips dries out and cracks may appear.

4. Lack of vitamins

Your body may experience a shortage of vitamins, mostly B group vitamins (B2, riboflavin), as well as iron and zinc.

5. Certain medications

Some drugs, for example, for high blood pressure, can cause an allergic reaction, which manifests itself in dry, chapped lips.

6. Hormonal changes

Some women may experience dry skin and lips during menopause, which is associated with a decrease in estrogen levels.

How to help your lips

What to do if your lips are dry and chapped? First of all, you need to prevent excessive drying of the skin: don’t lick your lips in the wind, and ensure that the air in your room is not dry. To moisturize the lips:

  • regularly use balms with natural ingredients (coconut and almond oil, vitamin E, and other antioxidants) before going out and before bedtime;
  • exfoliate the top layer of skin using soft scrubs;
  • when applying beauty products that can cause dryness of the skin on your face, avoid contact with the lips.

Remember that prevention is always better than treatment. If dry lips persist for a long time, despite all measures taken, you should consult a doctor.
