Many of us often call each other perfectionists. These are the pedantic, meticulous, order-obsessed people, often criticizing others, setting their own rules and standards. At the same time, they are highly susceptible to negative comments, attentive to details, and tend to fixate on their mistakes.

They perceive only two states of things: perfect and imperfect. Perfectionists strive to ensure that everything is done according to the highest standard. They control even the simplest situations, are afraid of failure, and punish themselves if they don’t succeed. They prefer to rely only on their own strength. In addition, perfectionists have been making incredible efforts to please everyone since childhood. It is even strange how such exaggerated demands are combined in their characters with an incredible love of nature, especially its most pristine parts.

With this in mind, most of us are accustomed to believe that perfectionists not only carefully plan everything, but even fuss over the things they care about. For example, here are two completely different girls down below. Which of them would you call a perfectionist?

In 2015, researchers conducted a study that gave some unexpected results. Compulsive habits, such as biting nails, twisting a strand of hair on your finger, or fiddling with pimples on your skin, can be much more obvious signs of perfectionism than a perfect look.

It is believed that such people are less inclined to relax, but more prone to boredom and frustration because their results don’t meet expectations. Repetitive actions are their way of dealing with a stressful situation. They simply concentrate on another short goal and try to manage their emotions more efficiently.


In general, there is nothing wrong if you bite your nails sometimes or unconsciously play with your hair. But in some cases, these habits can develop into something that interferes with your everyday life – a disorder. Professional cognitive therapy is one of the most helpful ways to deal with it.
