Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a very rare, but deadly condition. It affects people of any gender and age (men, women, and children), but half of all cases occur in females using tampons during menstruation.

The toxic shock is not caused by a tampon itself, but by the toxins of pathogenic bacteria, for which the menstrual discharge is a breeding ground facilitating their active reproduction.

Any hygiene product placed inside the vagina (tampons, diaphragms, contraceptive sponges and menstrual cups) should be removed in 4-6 hours, otherwise it can create conditions for the development of toxic shock. That’s why all girls and ladies need to know symptoms of this deadly condition.

In fact, the only hygienic products that guarantee complete safety from toxic shock are pads.

Here are the most common and clinically significant symptoms of toxic shock syndrome. Every woman must know them!

  1. A fever (39° - 40.5 °C / 102° - 105 °F), which remains until the treatment begins.
  2. Hypotension.
  3. Rashes on the skin resembling sunburn, including localized rash on the palms and feet.
  4. Involvement of other organs and systems in the pathological process (headache, nausea, diarrhea, cramps, reddening of mucous membranes of the eyes and throat).

Usually, the syndrome progresses within 48 hours causing loss of consciousness and shock. In some cases even death!
