How To Grow A Meter Tall Ginger At Home

May 28, 2018 17:38

Ginger has long and firmly established itself in the culture of many nations. It is used as a spice and medicine. This plant resembles sedge, but it is its meaty roots of a bizarre shape that are used widely.

Many people like to have a warming drink with ginger, lemon, and honey in frosty winter to prevent colds. If you are one of these people, then we have good news for you - this tropical plant can be grown at home. The process is simple and does not require much effort and cost.

Planting

As planting material, you can use rootstocks bought from a store.

Inspect them for integrity, and so that there are no signs of rot or damage. The surface should be dry, smooth, with a light silky shade. It is better if it is juicy and has clearly visible live buds. If the root is very dry, place it in warm water for a while to "bring to life."

You will need:

  • a flat wide pot or container for planting;
  • fertile ground (a mixture for growing vegetables will be best);
  • drainage (expanded clay, pearlite).

Put drainage on the bottom of the reservoir, pour in the soil, and place ginger roots in it so that live buds are on top of the soil. Pile approximately 0,78 in (2 cm) more soil, don’t plant it too deep.

Handling and harvest

The plant loves light and warmth, but not direct sunlight. Moderate watering is recommended. The roots will begin to rot with water accumulating in the pot. But do not overdry the soil either.

Ginger grows quickly under favorable conditions. The height of the stems can reach up to 3'28" (1 m).

If you planted it in spring, it is likely that it will bloom by fall. And after the stems and leaves fall, you can proceed to harvest.

Dig up the rootstalks. Gently remove the soil trying not to damage the surface of the rootstalks. Congratulations, you've grown a useful spice with your own hands!

Recipes

Now, you are ready to benefit from its taste and useful effects!

We offer two recipes of a ginger drink.

With apples

  1. Grate a small piece of ginger, pour hot water, and boil it.
  2. Add chopped apples and boil again for about 5 minutes under low heat.
  3. Let it steep for 15 minutes under the closed lid.

If desired, you can add a slice of lemon and a spoonful of honey when the drink has cooled down a little.

With pepper and citrus fruits

  1. Pour boiling water over the grated ginger root, leave it for one hour to brew. Strain.
  2. Add a small pinch of black pepper, chopped fresh mint leaves, and squeezed citrus juice – it can be a lemon, orange, grapefruit, or a mixture of juices.

Try it! It's delicious and useful, unless, of course, you have contraindications to spices.
