3 Simple Ways To Clean The Mattress With Homemade Remedies

November 14, 2018

How long have you avoided cleaning your mattress? Many of us postpone this tedious task for “one day.” Anyway, it should sooner rather than later be added to the to-do list of your cleaning plan. Dirty mattress negatively affects our health, and we hardly even suspect this. We have prepared for you the reasons why mattresses need regular cleaning, as well as how to do it correctly, especially in cases of old stains.

Why do you need to clean the mattress regularly?

  1. A thin sheet and mattress cover don’t protect you from the dust that accumulates inside.
  2. Dust mites can live in your mattress for a very long time. They eventually cause allergies.
  3. Looking after the mattress will help you get rid of the stale smell in the bedroom.
  4. Regular cleaning allows you to extend the mattress life.

3 ways to clean the mattress

Method 1

General cleaning from dust, unpleasant smell and dirt.

  • 1 glass of baking soda;
  • 4-5 drops of essential oil (for example, lavender);
  • colander;
  • vacuum cleaner.

Cleaning process

Add essential oil to the baking soda. Mix well. Lavender will suit here best since it removes unpleasant odors. If you want to use oil with antibacterial effects, add tea tree oil.

Pour the mixture into a colander or strainer and spread over the entire surface of the mattress. 1 hour after that, collect the powder with a vacuum cleaner.

Method 2

Tea, coffee, juice, and other stains.

  • vinegar;
  • ammonia;
  • baking soda;
  • water.

Cleaning process

Rub the stain with a diluted vinegar solution. In case it is a coffee or tea stain, use ammonia. If the stain is left by greasy liquid, soda will be most helpful.

When the stain is washed off, dry it with a clean cloth. Be sure to wipe the contours with a dilute ammonia solution. This will eradicate contours and streaks from an old stain. Sprinkle the remnants of moisture with salt or baking soda, leave for a few hours and then clean. Be sure to work with gloves and a mask.

Method 3

Old blood stains.

  • cold water;
  • 1 tbsp. salt;
  • 0.5 glass of cornstarch;
  • 0.25 glass of 3% solution hydrogen peroxide.

Cleaning process

Mix cornstarch, salt and hydrogen peroxide solution. The consistency should resemble toothpaste. If the stain is small, don’t use too much of the mixture. You can use water instead of peroxide.

Apply the paste with a spoon on the stain. Let it dry. Scrape it off and then clean it. Repeat the procedure if necessary.
