A mother who was going through a divorce was worried about where she and her two kids would live. However, she was able to come up with a way to build her own home for $13,000.

Charlotte Sapwell, mum to Eli and Theo, was facing homelessness after her marriage ended. It was so bad that for a while, she and the kids had to squat with her mother. She told ThatsLive, "I was sleeping on my parents’ couch while the kids shared the spare room."

She was a stay-at-home mom for so long that she just could not figure out what to do next. Then her grandfather, Rob, came up with a plan to help her out. Charlotte's parents had a backyard with an old office in it and he thought they could turn this into a decent place for her and her kids to live in.

This sounded like the perfect plan, except for one thing - she had to do all the work by herself. Even though she had no skill at all, her grandfather's faith in her made her determined.

I started with the basics. Things that seem simple like holding a hammer or drill the correct way are a lot harder than I thought.

Her grandfather was an experienced renovator so he was able to talk her through the processes. She also found help through YouTube videos. She learned from various tutorial clips and before long, Charlotte was able to create herself a bathroom with laundry, open plan kitchen and a dining and living area.

She made sure she purchased the things she needed as cheaply as possible. She said having her grandpa by her side teaching and encouraging her helped too. Her advice? Ask for help if you need it.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you ask you might find your network is a lot larger than you might think.

The house might be small but she and her kids were comfortable. She built a room and beds for them. The project was completed in six months.

"When I lie in bed and look across my house I can’t believe what I’ve achieved," she said, advising people that, at the end of the day, all that matters is to believe in yourself.

Her story is one that reminds us that anything is possible. She had no place to go and no building skills, but within months, she was able to turn her life around in a way that is truly unbelievable.
