March 16, 2018

Sid Luft, Judy’s Garland husband, has mentioned in his memoir about the sexual harassment that pursued his wife during the shooting of her most memorable role of Dorothy in Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz. He claimed that the actors who played munchkins tend to seduce the teenage Jude and thought to get away with that because of their small size.

Talented child

At the age of thirteen, Jude, born Frances Gumm in 1922, reached her first solid achievement when she sang in front of Louis B. Mayer, hence winning a contract at MGM. After that, she became famous as Jude Garland.

In 1939, she became a part of a grand project due to which she became so popular – the role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately, there have been some unpleasant moments during that filming.

Sexual harassment

Jude’s husband has published his memoir where he described the situation of the sexual allegations during the filming of The Wizard of Oz:

They would make Judy’s life miserable on set by putting their hands under her dress… The men were 40 or more years old. They thought they could get away with anything because they were so small.

Judy herself has also given the brief information of what had happened during that times. She said that the actors’ bad behavior was unpleasant indeed but didn’t give any other details about the abuse:

They were drunks. They put them all in one hotel… they got smashed every night, and the police had to pick them up in butterfly nets.

The actors themselves completely denied all accusations. They simply stated that the group enjoyed their time during the filming and totally rejected the shameful stories.

Hollywood tribute

Judy was a legendary identity even after the movie. Her concerts have gathered millions of people around the world to enjoy her touching voice.

Hollywood is going to pay its own tribute by filming the documentary Judy with Renee Zellweger in a leading role.
