Low performance

The outgoing secretary was in office for a little over a year, one of the shortest in recent history according to experts.

Given that his appointment was well received by foreign policy big wigs, his brief, uneventful time in office has been judged a disappointment.

An American foreign policy scholar, Paul Musgrave, said Tillerson's performance was near the bottom of the list of secretaries of state.

Major shakeup ahead of Kim Jong Un meeting

Following Tillerson's sack, his chief of staff, Margaret Peterlin, and deputy chief of staff, Christine Ciccone, have also submitted their resignation letters.

They will, however, serve until March 31 when their boss is expected to formally vacate his office.

This major shakeup comes ahead of Trump's much talked about sit-down with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The stakes are high given the sustained back and forth between the two leaders on the long range ballistic missile test programs run by Kim Jong Un.

Tillerson's replacement

Trump made the announcement on Twitter, Tuesday. It was through the president's tweet that Tillerson learned he had been fired, after a top aide showed him the tweet.

Trump said current CIA director, Mike Pompeo, will take over from the outgoing secretary.

The shuffle will see current CIA Deputy Director, Gina Haspel, move up to become the first woman to head the agency as its director.
