With six decades of acting and producing under his belt, plus several awards and other major recognition, Kirk Douglas can be considered one of Hollywood's biggest icon.

Epic career

Born in 1916, Douglas had his first film debut in the movie The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) when he was 30-years-old. He did not hit megastar status until the 1950s, and by the time the 1960s came around he was already an established and successful actor. In total, Douglas has been reported to have featured in more than 90 movies.

In terms of recognition of his talent and dedication to acting, Douglas had three Academy Award nominations, a Lifetime Achievement award and Presidential Medal of Freedom. In addition, he made it to the list of greatest male screen legends of classic Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute.

101st birthday

The living legend turned 101 on December 9th. He celebrated this special day with his 98-year-old wife, Anne, his (also famous) son, Michael Douglas, and other members of his family.

A beautiful cake with the inscription '101' on it was used to mark his birthday. Michael shared pictures from the celebration on his Facebook page. The stunning sunflower design on the cake symbolises one of Douglas' most famous roles where he played Vincent Van Gogh in Lust For Life. This little info was shared by Michael along with the picture.

There was also another cake used to celebrate the day. At first glance, it looked like a simple boxing gloves design. But Michael also explained that it was indicative of his father's performance in Champion.

Michael's wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, also wished the iconic actor a fantastic birthday celebration. She could not make it to the event but she sent her love via social media.

The couple's son, Dylan, shared an Instagram post where he wished his grandpa a happy birthday as well.

Surrounded by love

Clearly, Douglas is a man surrounded by love. His wife of over 60 years was right there with him to celebrate his birthday. His two sons, Michael and Joel, and his grandkids, Kelsey and Dylan, seemed to have a blast with the icon.

Dame Judi Dench, who got to meet Kirk Douglas a few days ago, even described him as a "legend in our family.” What better way to celebrate turning 101 than by being surrounded by warmth and happiness?

Happy birthday, Kirk. Here's to many more fantastic years with your wonderful family.
