Ahead of his May 19 wedding in 2018, Prince Harry has added another achievement to his list. This time, he has been named the successor to the position of Captain General of the Royal Marines.

The position was previously occupied by his grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Duke of Edinburgh announced his retirement from his official duties earlier this year.

Prince Philip - his long service and retirement

Prince Phillip has served in the position of Captain General since 1953, shortly after the death of the King George VI. 2017 makes it 53 years he has held the honorable role.

Richard Palmer, royal correspondent for the Daily Express in London made a formal announcement via Twitter on the 19th of December to this effect.

The official retirement of Prince Phillip was marked at a gathering of top Marine officials. Prince Harry was present at the meeting alongside his brother, Prince William. The event happened this Tuesday. Prince Harry is 33 and revealed that assuming the position means a lot to him.

Adjusting the wedding date.

Prince Harry is said to have set the wedding date to fiancée Meghan Markle backward in consideration of his grandfather whose health is of major concern. An expert on Royal matters said:

…one of the reasons that Prince Harry has wanted this wedding to happen quite quickly -- this is really whirlwind by royal standards -- is because his 96-year-old grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, is retired now and Prince Harry really wants him to be at his wedding.
