Margaret O’Brien Is 81. She Was One Of The Most Popular Child Actresses And Was Once Dubbed 'America's Sweetheart'

Margaret O’Brien is turned 81 on January 15th. The beautiful actress was most remembered for her spectacular acting performance in the 40's, a time when she was under contract with MGM studios.

Her early career

At the age of three, Margaret was already getting started in her acting career. She featured in her first MGM film Babes on Broadway, and this turned out to be one of her earliest memories. In 2017, she told Vanity Fair:

I remember Mickey (Rooney) saying, ‘Hello, the cute little girl!’

She went on to star in what would become her first major hit, Journey for Margaret (1942). This role brought worldwide popularity for the five-year-old. Her fame only continued to increase over time, and in 1944, she took home the Academy Award for Outstanding Child Actress for her role of Tootie in the musical film Meet Me in St. Louis.

Movie lovers enjoyed seeing Margaret shine, and for many, she was considered 'America's Sweetheart'.

Looking back on her days at MGM, the actress told Vanity Fair:

They treated us really as actors and actresses like they did the adults. They didn’t baby us or talk to us in baby talk or anything.

She went on to star in many more movies. Some of which became big hits.

Even though the heyday of her movie-making career is now over, she still does appearances from time to time.

Most recently, she was in the cast of Beverly Hills Christmas II where she starred alongside Aaron O'Connell and Ronn Moss.

Marriage and kids

Margaret was once married to Haron Allen Jr. The couple tied the knot in 1959 but got divorced in 1968. She later married to Roy Thorsen with whom she had her only child, Mara Tolene Thorsen, in 1977.

Even though she was never really able to shed her precocious child star persona, Margaret O'Brien was still able to impact Hollywood in a big way. She will always be celebrated.
