Barack Obama Shared His Traditional List Of Best Books And Songs Of 2017

January 3, 2018

Barack Obama started a very adorable tradition while he was residing on Pennsylvania Avenue. At the end of each year during his presidency, Obama announced a list of books and songs he found to be great in previous year.

Obama is a huge fan of books

The former president's love for books got its big start during his college years. About the time he spent at the Occidental College in California, Obama said: "I read tons of books." Furthermore, during his Illinois Senate run, Obama is credited with writing a book review for the Chicago Tribune.

Of course, his love towards independent bookstores was revealed last year when he bought 17 books. Some of the books that the 44th president purchased on that shopping spree were the Redwall trilogy by Brian Jacques and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

The reading list

Before we show you which books kept Barack Obama hungry for another page, let us see some of his choices from 2016:

  • Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by William Finnegan;
  • The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead;
  • H Is for Hawk by Helen MacDonald;
  • The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins;
  • Seveneves by Neal Stephenson.

For previous year, Obama gave quite a few recommendations. These are some excellent books that kept the mind of the former US head of the state. Here are some of them:

  • The Power by Naomi Alderman;
  • Grant by Ron Chernow;
  • Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond;
  • Janesville: An American Story by Amy Goldstein;
  • Exit West by Mohsin Hamid.

Obama also added a little extra for the basketball fans: Coach Wooden and Me by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Basketball (and Other Things) by Shea Serrano.

Even though he has turned 56, Barack Obama is known as quite modern and up to date man, especially when it comes to music. He said on multiple occasions that music is very important to him and that he enjoys various genres. Therefore, you should not be surprised by this song list from him:

  • Mi Gente by J Balvin & Willy William;
  • Havana by Camila Cabello (feat. Young Thug);
  • Blessed by Daniel Caesar;
  • The Joke by Brandi Carlile;
  • First World Problems by Chance The Rapper (feat. Daniel Caesar);
  • Rise Up by Andra Day.

This is only a part of the list, but you can see where Obama is going with this. It's all about keeping it real and positive. Excellent work!

We would also like to advise you to check the books from Barack Obama's list as they are top notch. In the meantime, why not set the mood for the day with some of the songs listed above.
