In November 1992, the world saw one of the most romantic Hollywood stories – The Bodyguard. It is an emotional story of a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) working as a pop star's bodyguard and, eventually, falling in love with the girl (Whitney Houston).
The film was adored by viewers and grossed over $400 million worldwide. Its soundtrack has countless awards and nominations – from Oscar to Grammy. And now, we offer you to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this genius movie by going through some of the most interesting facts about it.
They were going to use a different song
The legendary song "I Will Always Love You" is the calling card for both the movie and the charming Whitney Houston. But in at the beginning, the film creators had a different song in mind. It was Kevin Costner who loved the Dolly Parton's hit from 1974 and came up with the idea of using it for the movie, according to CMT.com.
Furthermore, it was Costner who convinced Whitney Houston to sing a cappella to make it sound even more personal and emotional, reports CMT.com.
I said, ‘We’re also going to do this a cappella at the beginning. I need it to be a cappella because it shows a measure of how much she digs this guy — that she sings without music’.
There might be no Whitney at all
When she first got the script, Whitney Houston had close to none acting experience. So, it comes as no surprise that the young singer was terrified to play the leading part in Mick Jackson's drama and work the same set with Kevin Costner.
In an interview with the Rolling Stone magazine, the singer recalled these days:
I wanted to do some acting, but I mean, I never thought I’d be co-starring with Kevin Costner!
It took her two years to make the final decision. And her co-star Kevin Costner was the one who convinced the singer to give it a try, reports Rolling Stone.
The Bodyguard is now a musical
In 2017, Sydney Lyric Theatre presented a musical show based on The Bodyguard's plot. The Australian Idol star Paulini Curuenavuli played Rachel Marron at most of the performances. The musical featured two other popular Australian artists – Kip Gamblin and Prinnie Stevens.
There is a new soundtrack album
In order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic Hollywood romance, the Whitney Houston Estate teamed up with Legacy Recording to release a brand-new album – I Wish You Love: More From The Bodyguard.
The album consists of 14 singles and contains both live and studio tracks recorded by Whitney Houston back in the 1990s. It was released on November 17, 2017.
The Bodyguard is yet another evidence of Whitney Houston's true talent and brilliance. And even though it has been over five years since the fabulous artist left this world, people still admire her and continue to watch her movies and sing her songs over and over again.
