Japan's Princess Mako announces engagement, friends’ thoughts
Engaged to former classmate from her Alma Mater - International Christian University – Princess Mako, first daughter to Prince Fumihito, is also the first of four grandchildren to be engaged in 2017.
She was set to marry 25-year-old Kei Komuro, a graduate student in Business Law.
Besides the official confirmation by the family’s Imperial Household Agency, their relationship was not secret to friends.
Their classmate recounts one time when the princess stated marriage considerations with Komuro.
Komuro is a calm and serious person.
Another classmate mentioned that the princess said:
As both Mako and Komuro are considerate of each other and have kind personalities, they will pair well
In a shocking twist, the pair released a statement via CNN, announcing a postponement of the wedding. In the statement, they said:
It is because of our immaturity and we just regret it. I wish to think about marriage more deeply and concretely and give sufficient time to prepare our marriage and for after the marriage.
Facts about Princess Mako
Eldest of three children of her parents, Princess Mako, born in 1991, is a member of the Japanese Imperial Family.
In 2014, having obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Cultural Heritage, Princess Mako went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Museology at the University of Leicester in that same year.
Princess Mako is also proficient in Japanese Sign language.
